ABOUT US
For Larry Terrell, little did he know that his compass setting would one day take him to Covington, Louisiana, to establish a moving company. A circuitous path, Terrell was the son of a railroad telegraph operator who had a sideline business of hauling sand and gravel and then sold his trucks to buy a dairy farm in Mississippi.
Still a toddler, Terrell’s first move was Chatawa, Mississippi, where he learned to grow peanuts and milk cows. Larry recalls, “My dad was determined. He wanted my brothers and sister and me to get a good education, and he sent us to good schools. We worked hard on the farm, and learned a lot about business and about responsibility.” Larry went on to play football in junior college and then finished at University of Southern Mississippi. There he found a job to help cover college expenses at Gandy Transfer for $2.35 an hour. The year was 1980.
By 1983, Terrell was promoted to manager and paid close attention to the business side of the “household good moving business.” By 1987, he was ready to start his own moving business and with a partner, moved to Covington to establish Northlake Moving and Storage. That was 30 years ago.
Today, Terrell is a leader in the moving and storage industry as well as the transportation industry. He has served as president of the Louisiana Motor Transport Association, Chairman of the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Louisiana, and serves on the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry’s Weights and Standards Commission as well as many other boards.
Northlake employs more than 20 people who oversee local moves which are within a 150-mile radius of Covington, as well as, national moves across state lines and international moves. The company has several governmental contracts in addition to corporate ones, but Northlake’s bread and butter remains household moves, taking families from one home to another. In addition to the moving services, Northlake also offers storage and distribution services.
Recently, Terrell’s oldest daughter, Casey Terrell has joined the company and plays an important role in day-to-day operations. Overseeing customer service, she continues the Terrell tradition of putting clients needs first, and ensuring positive outcomes for each move.
Focused on safety, Northlake is committed to customer service. As an Atlas Van Lines agent, Northlake is part of a relocation network which uses the most current technology to support every aspect of a client’s move.
